We've Added New Words! Kvlt is a term used by and about fans of the black metal subgenre of heavy metal. Fans of black metal use kvlt of more obscure, earlier bands that exemplify the genre and to show their inside knowledge. Fans of other kinds of metal or other music may use kvlt to mock their passionate fandom and the perceived extremeness of the subgenre.

Black metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that heavily features—even for metal standards— satanic , anti-Christian, or pagan content.

The subgenre is known for fast tempos, experimentation, and musicians dressing up as corpses or demons. Black metal emerged in the Norwegian heavy metal scene during the s and developed a cult following.

As more bands formed, black metal fans began using the term kvlt to refer to bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth that exemplified the satanic imagery of the genre. Evidenced by , the term kvlt is apparently an alternate spelling of cult meant to mimic older spellings and as a complimentary allusion to Nordic or pagan culture.

Most Scandinavian languages spell cult as kult. Within the black metal community, kvlt is and has been a positive term. Possibly due to this, kvlt became a word used to mock or provoke black metal fans by enthusiasts of other subgenres of metal music. This album was very influential to the genre and is often credited for it's creation and genre title.

There are many other highly influential pieces such as The term "true" is basically a phrase which originated back when Black Metal in Norway was starting to take form. The band Gorgoroth is often noted for using the term "True Norwegian Black Metal" in merchandising and what have you. This term basically has no meaning whatsoever and has essientially become a joke I wouldn't concern myself too deeply with it if I were you because it has little to nothing to do with the music itself.

I know this is on other threads but I figured I'd include it just for the hell of it I find that I can relate to the aesthetics commonly found in it's music, album art, and the appearence of the band members. A very specific style as a matter of fact. Black everything lol without being goth. Be yourself. This one is sometimes hard to explain and it also depends on which band or sub genre of Black Metal your speaking of.

I'll try my best though. But all of those things can be deviated from and still be considered "Black Metal". It just takes awhile to pick up an ear for it. If you listen to enough Black Metal you'll know what I'm talking about it's not hard. I think that by searching around the forum you will find answers to your questions.

There are tons of mini interview threads already. Kvlt is a term used by black metal fans who take themselves too seriously. I think it's more of a joke term than anything, at least anymore As a quick and simple "guide" to question 4: Buy a leather jacket, add som chains and stuff, but not too flashy, try to be minimalistic but still cool. Tie them about where your heal ends and let them be open. Get some cool looking belts. I have quite a collection myself there.
