Although Carter protests that they aren't his and were buried with Zia, the god tells Carter that they could be his, stating that the crook and flail are the symbols of the pharaoh like the staff and the wand, only a hundred times more powerful.
Horus points out that Carter was able to channel their power without any practice and suggests that Carter could unite the House of Life as its leader and that together they could crush their enemies. Horus tempts Carter with the idea that together they could defeat Apophis and protect Brooklyn House , but Carter refuses, stating that the crook and flail belong to Ra and they need to restore him. After Carter wakes up, Zia suggests that Iskandar had left the crook and flail with her because he believed that Carter would eventually find her.
Upon entering the Duat and finding Babi and Nekhbet waiting for him and Sadie at the sun boat , Carter confronts them with the crook and flail, causing them to back away and Nekhbet to show a note of admiration in her voice even as she claims that while it's a bold move, it won't save them. When Nekhbet refuses to listen, Carter uses the crook to force the two gods to their knees and demands that they swear loyalty to Ra. When the two hesitate, Carter raises the flail, causing them both to flinch and comply.
Carter then banishes the gods with a slash of the crook. When Carter, Sadie, Bes and Tawaret located Ra in the House of Rest , Carter returns the crook and flail to their original owner, suggesting that he needs them back.
However, the now senile Ra chews on the crook instead. When the sun boat reaches Apophis' prison, the sun god chases one of the servant lights around, trying to smash it with the flail. Horus urges Carter to take the crook and flail back to face Menshikov, but Carter knows that if he did take them back, he would never return them to Ra and that the crook and flail aren't powerful enough to stop Apophis.
After Desjardins sacrifices himself to banish Apophis with an execration , Ra is sitting on his throne, resting his head on the loop of the crook and halfheartedly swinging the flail at the servant lights. When the sun boat lands at Brooklyn House, Zia and Walt manage to prop Ra up who looks more regal while holding the crook and flail. While being chased by Bloodstained Blade , Carter attempts to reach into the Duat and pull out a weapon, but he only succeeds in pulling out an ostrich feather, suggesting that he's too deep in the Duat for even Horus to help him.
When Carter tries again, he pulls out Ra's crook and flail, much to his shock as they should be with Ra. Horus doesn't respond when Carter asks him where they came from, suggesting that even the war god is shocked by their sudden appearance.
Carter attempts to wield the crook in defense against the demon, but is unsure of how to use it. Fortunately, Zia kills the demon before he can cause any further harm. While fleeing the destruction of the Egyptian Queen , Carter manages to hang onto the crook and flail with his right hand, surprising him as Carter didn't even realize that he still had them.
While discussing how Ra wants Zia to become his host and her fears about it, Carter offers her the crook and flail, stating that they just appeared and he figures that they showed up for a reason and Zia should take them.
However, Zia refuses, telling Carter that he's right that they didn't appear by accident but they had appeared in Carter's hands, not hers. While the crook and flail may be Ra's, Horus must be pharaoh. Carter is nervous about the idea of wielding the crook and flail and being deemed worthy of the most powerful magic weapons in creation, but Zia reassures him that just like Ra needs Horus' support, she needs his.
After Ra is reborn through taking Zia as his host, Carter offers him the crook and flail but Ra refuses to take them. Ra reveals that Carter is the rightful pharaoh and Ra has only returned to fight his old enemy, not to assume the throne. They resemble leather and plant sandals Tutankhamun would have worn in life. The role of the sandal-bearer to a pharaoh was one of the most important positions in Ancient Egyptian society.
Ancient Egyptians believed the body was needed in the afterlife and a great deal of care was taken to preserve it after death. It goes on forever. The crossed hands are made of gold with coloured glass while the crook and flail have silver cores. Elaborate pieces of jewellery known as pectorals were similar to large necklaces and would have been worn over the chest.
The gold falcon here represents the god Horus, who is holding the sign for eternity shen in his claws. Horus was thought to be the creator and protector of the pharaohs. Senet was a popular game in Ancient Egypt across all levels of society.
