With most of the same creative personnel at the helm, Fear Itself had a chance of success. Sadly, it barely got out of the starting gate. Ratings were underwhelming from the start, with it probably not helping much that the premiere episode "The Sacrifice" ended up being one of the weaker installments.
The ratings continued on a downward trajectory, as did most reviews of the series. After episode eight, NBC put Fear Itself on hiatus for the duration of the summer Olympics, but never ended up bringing it back. It was over a year later, when Fear Itself came out on DVD, that the fans the show did have got to see the other five already filmed episodes. As with the ones that aired on NBC, these five were largely a mixed bag.
One hindrance Fear Itself had that Masters of Horror didn't was content standards, as broadcast TV was a much different world than Showtime. To NBC's credit, the subject matter was still very dark, especially "Family Man," which boasts an extremely cruel twist ending, and "Eater," about a cannibal serial killer.
A television series broken down into thirteen separate sixty-minute films from premiere horror writers and directors.
