The company constantly does underhanded things to try and make a buck - they throw their frontline staff under the bus to deal with customers upset about changes they have no control over.

Recently, they no longer allow state to state transfers that maintain tenure in discounts, effectively forcing existing customers to start over from scratch if they decide to move across state lines. Pros None. Cons Stressful, low pay, constantly berated by upset customers, no help from the company or management. If I would do it all over again I would have chosen a different career path and not the one working for a State Farm agent there is not much room for advancement unless you want to become an agent.

Pros Good snacks. Cons No benefits no vacation set in place at the agency. Great company well recognized. State Farm speaks for itself. Many different products to offer. Underwriting is typically fair and expedient. Pros Name recognition. Cons Corporate does not care at all about agent team members.

One good thing about State Farm, is that they are typically flexible with your schedule, but from there, it all depends on your agent.

A lot of favoritism is played, I knew people that earned more and knew way less than I did. The pay is not worth the stress. Pros Schedule flexibility. Cons No benefits. Nice place to start off your career and open new opportunities.

If you really like to sell insurance, this is the place. Pros Commission when you exceed goals. Cons Sometimes no time to take a break. Its main product is indexed universal life insurance, a form of permanent coverage that provides a cash value in addition to life insurance. For example, if somebody wants to buy a plan through State Farm for life insurance, but the company will not qualify the person do to pre-existing conditions, you will most likely lose that deal to some other insurance company, assuming the company can qualify the client for life insurance.

However, if you represented multiple companies, and could have sold another insurance company instead of State Farm, then you would have sealed the deal, helped the client, and made the commission. And what that translates into is fewer closed deals that will go to other insurance agencies or other agents. An independent agent represents multiple companies. Many times this translates into more prospects converted into sales.

I would not recommend becoming a state farm agent, unless you have about 50K to invest. I know this is not what they will tell you, but it is the truth.

A typical work day at my agency is balancing one on one customer service with new client sales. We make on average about outbound sales calls each day to generate new business. I learn something new everyday about my team, my customers and people in general. We are self managed as a business owner. I have created processes and procurers for my team to have continued success on a daily basis. My office staff and myself are a very closely net group of people and we take care of each other like family.
