Both supply methods played a crucial role in minimising the carbon footprint of the scheme, drastically reducing the number of vehicle movements required on the strategic road network. In addition, Aggregate Industries transported the aggregate used in its asphalt mixes by rail, further reducing its environmental impact.
In total, of our personnel were involved in the scheme across contracting, aggregates, asphalt, cementitious and wagon drivers. We managed risks such as , on-site vehicle movements delivering material to the TITAN pavers, carried out additional risk assessments and introduced new working practices to minimise and control the risk posed by COVID too. Given the sheer size and complexity of the project, the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme has set the gold standard on what the UK construction industry can achieve working with government organisations such as Highways England in creating a world-class road network.

A through route will be maintained through Huntingdon, making use of the Brampton Road bridge to cross the railway line and constructing a new link road from Brampton Road to connect with the A14 to the west.
This means that responsibility for the road will pass to the local authority. Read more about our work in Huntingdon. We built a new single carriageway between Swavesey and Girton, approximately five and half miles in length and linking to the A old A14 between Godmanchester and Swavesey.
