When was god bless america written

Even working only in one key, he could write every kind of song. So while he had no real attachment to the idea of Easter or Christmas, his feelings about America were genuine. It gave him the life he could never have had in Russia.

He became not only a wealthy, successful man, he was famous and beloved. That truth, for which gratitude is expressed, is woven into the fabric of the song. He wrote it in at the age of 25, some twenty years after arriving in America.

But even in the army, he was mostly busy writing songs, and wrote a review called Yip Yip Yaphank. Written during WWI, with the rise of Hitler in the lates, he revised it as a prayer for peace, and was popularized by the singer Kate Smith, who performed it on her radio show and recorded it.

Smith sang the song as the show closer on her live national broadcast that night. Everyone wanted to know where they could get the music. After that, Smith almost always included the song in her weekly show, and it became her trademark during a career that spanned five decades. She also added a short poem-prelude that Berlin had written:.

Storm clouds were indeed gathering over Europe. The Japanese had already invaded China two years earlier, beginning the war in Asia. That arrangement is still in effect today. Other wartime songs would remind Americans what they were fighting against. Every song has a story about why it was written. Songs from the past are like recordings from long ago. They give us a sense of what our parents, grandparents, and extra-old ancestors feared, hoped for, and celebrated.
